Biographical Sketch of Dr. David L. Deeds

Dr. Deeds is currently The Schulze Chair in Entrepreneurship at the University of St. Thomas and the Co-Founder and Executive Editor of The Entrepreneur and Innovation Exchange (www.EIX.org) and FamilyBusiness.org ( www.Familybusiness.org ). These publications focus on research translation and providing approachable content to students, practitioners and policymakers. 

During his career Dr. Deeds has held faculty positions at The Schulze School at the University of St. Thomas, The University of Texas at Dallas, The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University and The Fox School of Business at Temple University. He founded the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Texas at Dallas, created the concentration in Bioscience Entrepreneurship at the Weatherhead School of Management and founded the eFest Undergraduate Business Concept Challenge. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1994. In 2001 he was a named research fellow at Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship. In 2007, Dr. Deeds was awarded the Haniel Fellowship in Entrepreneurship at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. He currently serves as a Senior Visiting Scholar at IE University in Madrid. 

Prior to pursuing a career as an academic, Dr. Deeds was co-founder, with his brother, of LightSpeed Corporation, a computer hardware and software developer specializing in custom CAD/CAM computer systems, from 1983-1989. 

Dr. Deeds’ 60+ articles have been cited over 15,000 times. He has published in leading outlets including Inc. Magazine, The Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Journal of Management Studies, The Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, The Journal of Product Innovation Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Harvard Business Review and numerous others. 

His current research interests include innovation and entrepreneurship in family business, the management of strategic alliances, new product development processes, technology commercialization, market entry strategies, Immigrant Entrepreneurship, technology forecasting and the translation of research to practice.
