VCIC 2014 Team and Mentors

The San Diego State University team did an exceptional job at the 2014 Regional Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) held at USC. The team secured the second place award overall, finishing only one point behind the first-place team. The graduate level VCIC is a strategy competition designed to give MBA students the opportunity to emulate the behaviors of venture capitalists by acting as investors, reviewing plans submitted by actual entrepreneurial companies, and seeking funding.

The 2014 team consisted of Topher Williams, David Duwe, Lauren Fraser, Greg Robertson, and Casey Covey, who all proved confident and well prepared for the duration of the high speed competition. The team was judged by professional venture capitalists, many of who voiced their praise of the strong effort put forward by the team. It was an exciting journey for five MBA students and they were collectively very pleased with the outcome. The team worked diligently in the months leading up to the competition holding mock sessions on Saturday mornings. The sessions provided them with the opportunity to practice and fine-tune their skills, as well as grade business plans and interact with experienced venture capitalists.

Peter Shaw, Lavin Center Advisory Board Member and Managing Director of Shaw Management Advisors, and David Titus, President of San Diego Venture Group, served as coaches to the team, with former VCIC participant, John McMillan assisting in an advising role. All three mentors were extremely proud of the students’ accomplishments. In turn, the team was grateful to their coaches and advisor for providing them with their support and guidance. This marks another great achievement for the SDSU entrepreneurship program and demonstrates the strong foothold and positive strides the program continues to make.
