Internship Spring 2014 Projects
The Spring 2014 internship projects were made up of four non-profit companies and two for-profit organizations. Interns faced strategic challenges that were necessary to overcome in order to meet their organizations' objectives. The graduate and undergraduate students worked with projects related to marketing and strategic marketing planning, as well as search engine optimization for the client companies. The main outcome of this program is to provide SDSU students with real-world experience and to create solutions to meet the clients' objectives. Click here to apply for a student intern.

Project Brief | Epilepsy Foundation
The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to the prevention and control of epilepsy and its consequences, and to helping families overcome the problems associated with this condition. They have served the San Diego community since 1954, offering personal counseling, education and a variety of supportive services. All of these services are free and available to anyone whose life is touched by epilepsy, regardless of the severity of the disability and without regard to race, creed, age, sex or nationality. The Epilepsy Foundation was seeking interns to update, search engine optimize, and rebuild its current website.

Tan Doan is a recent graduate of San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design. He is constantly inspired by the passion for design and driven by the integrity of hard work. Noted for being open-minded, creative, strategic, and for paying close attention to detail. Tan has experience in print/web design, branding strategy, typography and user interface.
Aditya Kappagantula is a graduate Computer Science student at San Diego State University. He is highly interested in web technologies and has worked in the domain for over two years. He has experience building websites from scratch and maintaining data sets. He is currently building a content rich website for the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County.
Nick Herrera is a Kinesiology major with an emphasis in Physical Therapy and a minor in Entrepreneurship at San Diego State University. He worked in the Corporate Development department at KPBS, securing financial commitments for radio and television program and support from the business community, individuals, foundations, agencies and media buyers. He also worked for the San Diego based promotional company Amplified Access which introduced him to the music industry. Already an entrepreneur, Nick co-founded the company Brightside Network Media in 2012, an online promotional organization focused on the music industry with over 275,000 subscribers worldwide on their iTunes podcast. Since the formation of Brightside, Nick has grown a passion for web design, SEO, and digital marketing. On campus, Nick is a member of the Future Physical Therapist Organization, and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Nick's future endeavors are to further establish Brightside as a media network/record label and keep gaining experience in the aforementioned fields.
Project Brief | Shapery Enterprises
Shapery Enterprises is an operating company for various corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies operated thereunder. The company is focused on design, development and ownership of high-rise office and commercial buildings. Shapery Enterprises CEO, Sandor W. Shapery, is an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of California. Mr. Shapery is also a member of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce Infrastructure Committee, former Vice Chairman of the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Stakeholders Working Group and a charter member of the Southern California Leadership Counsel founded by California’s four previous Governors. Shapery Enterprises was seeking an intern to implement the “Osbourne Electriquette” project in Balboa Park, San Diego.
Michael Donahue, Intern
Michael Donahue is a second year graduate student at San Diego State University pursuing a Master's of Business Administration Degree. He completed his undergraduate studies in Pennsylvania, at Wilkes University, obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology, with an emphasis in Plant Molecular Biology. Michael has over a decade of experience as a bench scientist, working at Human Genome Sciences, The Dow Chemical Company, and a number of local San Diego startup ventures. Michael is currently employed at Shapery Enterprises focusing on new business development, operations, and project management. Michael is working on the most recent project at Shapery Enterprises, the reintroduction of the "Osbourne Electriquette" to Balboa Park for the 2015 Centennial Celebration.
Project Brief | Academics Through Athletics
Academics Through Athletics Foundation, ATA, was founded by a group of local sports coaches and business people to help mentor and prepare at-risk high school student athletes in the San Diego area. The ATA Foundation is the brainchild of Rolando Garcia who believes that education is the best way for students to rise above challenging circumstances. The founders of ATA have a long track record of helping local students improve their lives and further their education. The specific purpose of this organization is to engage in charitable and educational activities including but not limited to tutoring, mentoring, and assisting disadvantaged or underprivileged students to achieve academic success. The goal is for students to be admitted at a college or university, to receive scholarships or other financial assistance, and to engage in any related activities as allowed by law. The foundation was looking for an intern to develop a solid student database, as well as assist with marketing aspects such as fundraising events and media presence.
Joanna Chang, Intern
Joanna Chang is a first year MBA student at San Diego State University, specializing in International Business. She completed her undergraduate studies in Western Language and Literature at Kaohsiung National University in Taiwan. After graduating from college, she worked in the industry of international ocean freight forwarding and logistics for two years, which developed her interest in the business world and inspired her to earn an MBA degree in the U.S. She is passionate about non-profit organizations and volunteered with various charities since college. With her motivation and strong initiative, Joanna looks forward to accumulating as much experience as possible and to pursue her career in non-profit organizations or social enterprises.
Project Brief | Osteopathic Center for Children
The Osteopathic Center for Children has been providing state of the art, integrative, & holistic care for over 30 years to children from around the world. With the overwhelming health needs of children, there is an ever-increasing demand for continued training in osteopathic medicine. The Osteopathic Center for Children sponsors educational programs to educate physicians, medical students and the general public on osteopathic medicine throughout the year. In addition, their staff maintains professorships with medical schools and universities across the world.
Cynthia Jereige, Intern
Cynthia Jereige is a graduate MBA student at San Diego State University currently pursuing a specialization in Health Services Administration. She recently graduated from the University of California San Diego with a degree in Economics, a minor in the History of the Near East, and completed pre-medical school requirements. Her interests include marketing, linguistics, and international relations. Combining her ambitious and dedicated personality, she looks forward to being an integral player in the healthcare industry.
Project Brief | Classroom of the Future Foundation
The Classroom of the Future Foundation advances public education throughout San Diego County by inspiring business, community, and educational leaders to support, create and adopt innovative learning practices with enhanced instructional technologies that can measurably improve academic achievement. The organization provides collaboration, validation, and financial facilitation to help K-12 educators prepare 21st century learners and celebrate their success. In the last decade, the Foundation has generated more than $5 million to support dozens of innovative programs that reached thousands of students and teachers. The Classroom of the Future Foundation was looking for a marketing intern to perform competitive marketplace due diligence as well as to assist with marketing and contacting present and past sponsors for their annual events.
Caryn Laveman, Intern
Caryn Laveman is a second year graduate student at San Diego State pursuing a Masters of Business Administration degree. She completed her undergraduate studies at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Accounting and Human Resources. She is currently employed in the hospitality industry and actively involved in the local business community.

Headquartered in San Diego, CA, Loma Media is a creative services partner specializing in the design, production and implementation of engaging content that delivers results. They combine award-winning creativity and global experience to provide powerful communications solutions for major brands and emerging businesses alike. They create mission-critical content, integrated digital campaigns, and targeted broadcast advertising and programming to build brands and inspire action. Loma Media came to the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center for a student who could help manage their direct marketing and social media campaigns as well as help with their video productions for the Balboa Park 2015 Centennial Project.
Drew Halsch is an SDSU undergraduate student majoring in Entrepreneurship with a minor in Marketing. He is passionate about seeing an idea from inception to completion, he is devoted to end results that contribute to the overall purpose of the team, and has excellent leadership and time management skills.
