Internship Fall 2013 Projects
The Fall 2013 internship projects were made up of three non-profit organizations and one for-profit organization. Interns faced strategic challenges that were necessary to overcome in order to meet their organizations' objectives. The graduate and undergraduate students worked with projects related with marketing and strategic marketing planning for the client companies. Project Brief | American Red Cross, San Diego
The San Diego/Imperial Counties chapter of the American Red Cross is part of the largest and most diverse service organization in the United States. The organization serves more than 3.6 million people and covers nearly 10,000 square miles in the two counties. It provides food and shelter in emergencies, assists members of the armed forces and their families, teaches lifesaving skills, and more. The vision of the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter is to be the most trusted community service organization in education, preparation and response to natural disasters and human emergencies. This organization was seeking a marketing intern to design, implement and manage a stewardship program to support the foundation and corporate partner relationships
Cynthia Jereige is a graduate MBA student at San Diego State University currently pursuing a specialization in Health Services Administration. She recently graduated from the University of California San Diego with a degree in Economics, a minor in the History of the Near East, and completed pre-medical school requirements. Her interests include marketing, linguistics, and international relations. Combining her ambitious and dedicated personality, she looks forward to being an integral player in the healthcare industry.
Project Brief | Ocean Discovery Institute
For the past decade, Ocean Discovery Institute has been empowering youth from diverse backgrounds to protect the ocean and natural environment, improve the health of our communities, and strengthen the quality of life. It is the only non-profit in the San Diego region expressly dedicated to educating urban and diverse youth through ocean science. The U.S. has fallen short in preparing its young people, particularly those from urban and diverse backgrounds, with the scientific knowledge and environmental awareness that are needed for tomorrow's leadership. Ocean Discovery Institute closes this gap by providing rigorous science and conservation programs that ensure young people understand how the world works and how they can make a difference. The organization was looking for a communications and social media intern responsible for increasing the visibility of Ocean Discovery Institute through online & social media outlets.
Stefanie Davis, Intern
Stefanie Davis is currently studying Information Systems in the College of Business Administration at San Diego State University. Her involvement with campus life ranges from serving as the VP of Events for Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), to attending meetings of various organizations within the College of Business. When Stefanie finishes the undergraduate experience, she hopes to make a positive impact in the community, encouraging women and minorities to get involved in business and technology. After having a fulfilling career in the field of Information Systems, she plans to share her knowledge as a college professor.
Project Brief | Classroom of the Future Foundation
The Classroom of the Future Foundation advances public education throughout San Diego County by inspiring business, community, and educational leaders to support, create and adopt innovative learning practices with enhanced instructional technologies that can measurably improve academic achievement. The organization provides collaboration, validation, and financial facilitation to help K-12 educators prepare 21st Century learners and celebrate their success. In the last decade, the Foundation has generated more than $5 million to support dozens of innovative programs that reached thousands of students and teachers. The Classroom of the Future Foundation was looking for a marketing intern to perform competitive marketplace due diligence as well as to assist with marketing and contacting present and past sponsors for their annual events.
Caryn Laveman, Intern
Caryn Laveman is a second year graduate student at San Diego State pursuing a Masters of Business Administration degree. She completed her undergraduate studies at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and Human Resources. She is currently employed in the Hospitality industry and actively involved in the local business community.
Project Brief | Capital Bank
Capital Bank is a Premier Business and Professional local bank in south Orange County. It was formed by Capital Bank Financial Corp. (formerly North American Financial Holdings, Inc.), a bank holding company incorporated in the state of Delaware in 2009. Capital Bank Financial Corp.’s objective is to create a regional banking franchise in the southeastern United States through organic growth and acquisitions of other banks, including failed, underperforming and undercapitalized banks. Beginning in December 2009, Capital Bank Financial Corp. raised approximately $900 million to make acquisitions through a series of private placements of its common stock. Since then, Capital Bank Financial Corp. has acquired seven community banks. Currently, the company provides innovative financial solutions tailored to the needs of customers, exceeding customer's expectations and producing superior shareholder value that become solutions. The company participated in the Lavin Center Internship Program to seek a marketing intern that could assist with the SEO and create a competitive analysis.
Camila Bernal, Intern
Camila Bernal is a second year MBA student specializing in Entrepreneurship at San Diego State University. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business Management in Colombia with an Academic Excellence Recognition. She is passionate about marketing and implementation of new business ideas. She is currently interning at Capital Bank and Power Digital Marketing Inc. Camila is a proactive person with strong initiative, a driven personality and an improvement-oriented mindset working to have her own company in the future. Currently, she is an executive member in San Diego State University Entrepreneur Society.
