California Entrepreneurship Educators Conference - Creative Disruption

Launchin

The Lavin Entrepreneurship Center continues to push the edge of entrepreneurship by uniting educators, researchers, and thought leaders every year to facilitate sharing of new ideas. Our primary mission of the California Entrepreneurship Educators Conference is to formulate these ideas and implement them on university campuses to provide students the best possible entrepreneurship education and experiences. At the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center, we are passionate about making connections and bringing together entrepreneurs from all over the globe.

April 12th-14th, 2018 will be the dates for the next California Entrepreneurship Educators Conference. It will be hosted at San Diego State University. More information and logistics will be forthcoming in the next few months. For now, save the date on your calendars and check out our past conferences !

The California Entrepreneurship Educators Conference continues to attract divergent thinkers willing to share new ideas. Throughout the years, we have covered a wide range of topics including design and critical thinking. We have had a number of entrepreneur leaders, business founders, and researchers help us consider dynamic approaches to the way we teach and research entrepreneurship

The 2018 California Entrepreneurship Educators Conference at San Diego State University, hosted by the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center, will be highly interactive. Attendees will participate in collaborative sessions and workshops, sharing and exchanging ideas to implement on their respective university campuses. We invite you to join us as we brainstorm how we might “creatively disrupt” entrepreneurship for our students of tomorrow.

“As educators and researchers, who are also humans, we see the creative disruption occurring in marketplaces around the world. This is an opportunity to bring creative disruption into the coursework and research we conduct on our campuses.”

Alcala, Spain - Experiencing Entrepreneurship Across the Globe

Judge Venture Start

San Diego State University has over 50 study abroad opportunities for students each year, covering a vast array of cultures from all over the world. Each country has an entrepreneurial ecosystem that students will interact with, including fellow entrepreneur students, incubators, and founders. The Lavin Entrepreneurship Center and the Fowler College of Business offer great opportunities for students to study abroad while being enrolled in entrepreneurship courses. This summer, the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center partnered with the University of Alcala in Spain and CETYS University in Baja California, Mexico, to create a ten day intensive program in Alcala. Executive Director of the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center Dr. Alex DeNoble led a group of 14 SDSU students enrolled in Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship (MGT 358) while studying abroad.

Students gained insights on entrepreneurship in a cross-cultural setting from the unique perspective of the Spanish and Mexican cultures. This culturally diverse and interdisciplinary program gave students the opportunity to work with their counterpart students from the University of Alcala and CETYS University. Together they analyzed emerging business trends and were tasked with designing a business model based on perceived opportunities. Students also learned about climate change and sustainability and evaluated the viability of various business opportunities in Spanish, Mexican, and U.S contexts.

After the trip, participants voiced their satisfaction of the program with many listing their time abroad as one of the most rewarding experiences of their academic careers. These students had the opportunity to gain a global perspective on entrepreneurship and engage with company founders. The Lavin Entrepreneurship Center and the Fowler College of Business will continue to develop and expand the program in order to offer a diverse group of destinations for students to explore entrepreneurship in different cultural settings.

The students from PSGR Krishnammal College also participated in a joint session with students from CETYS University, Baja California, Mexico, that were led by engineering professor Dr. Luis Basaca. This session was designed by the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center and College of Extended Studies to enhance education and foster students’ interest in global entrepreneurship. These classes were taught by Dr. Marcos Bosquetti, professor of management at Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil, Dr. Lois Olson, professor at SDSU in the Fowler College of Business, and Kimberly Davis King, SDSU lecturer of management. During this session, the students role played different business scenarios on negotiation across cultures. Students learned the educational and practical implications of cultural diversity and globalization issues. In addition, the group of students from both universities attended a memorable dinner at the Royal India Restaurant in Downtown San Diego, along with SDSU staff and professors. Upon completion of their study abroad program, the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center and College of Extended Studies recognized each student with a certificate of completion.
