New Collaborative Building to Launch New Ventures

EIS Building

San Diego State University has opened its doors to the new Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences (EIS) Complex. This space will serve scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs and allow for collaboration under the same roof. Among the many facilities in the building, the EIS Complex also houses the William E. Leonhard Entrepreneurship Center, an umbrella for the Zahn Innovation Platform (ZIP) Launchpad, the ZIP Idea Lab and the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center. Next door to our facility is the H. G. Fenton Idea Lab, a place to build prototype. Collectively, all centers will help teach valuable entrepreneurial skills, launch new ventures, and bring collaboratively-developed products to the market.

Disruptive Thinking for Entrepreneurship Educators

Baja Tour

The 2018 California Entrepreneurship Educators Conference held at San Diego State University's campus on April 12th-14th is not your ordinary conference. Our theme this year, Creative Disruption, is more than just a concept; it’s a philosophy for how we educate students on our collective campuses. The conference gathers together academic leaders from across the innovation and entrepreneurship spectrum to share ideas, start new collaborations, and learn emerging practices in the evolving field of entrepreneurship education and research.

This year, we have two exploratory pre-conference events. One is on the critical nature of design thinking and will be taught in our new interdisciplinary building in our Design Thinking lab. The other pre-conference event will be an actual exploratory adventure, physically visiting startups and incubators in both Tijuana and Ensenada, Mexico. That trip will be capped off with a visit to a winery in the renowned Valle de Guadalupe region. Register for CEEC here, seating is limited!

For questions about our conference, please contact Pamela Razo at or call 619-594-2781.

Helping SDSU Students and Local Businesses Connect

Focusing on supporting local start-ups and young and growing ventures, the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center connects students with internship opportunities that will further develop their skill sets and professional competencies while providing companies talented interns. Qualified undergraduate and graduate students are individually matched with companies to ensure mutually beneficial relationships.

In the fall 2017 semester, we placed 13 interns in 11 different companies throughout San Diego county. Such companies included HNM Systems, Founders First Capital Partners and San Diego Blood Bank. We also placed one of our Lavin Entrepreneur students in his third internship. These internships provide students the opportunity to build relationships with experienced professionals who will not only lend advice, knowledge, and insights, but also provide guidance and support as they build their professional careers.

Successful Entrepreneur Shares His Journey with Students

Steve Lake

On Wednesday February 7th, more than 300 SDSU students joined the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center to listen to Steve Lake, co-founder of Sector 9. He is a serial entrepreneur who has often taken the road less traveled. During his talk, Steve shared his journey from the backyard to becoming an industry leader. We also had the famous Sector 9 Ball Truck on campus and raffled four Sector 9 skateboards to students. This event was part of the annual L. Robert Payne Speaker Series in which distinguished entrepreneurs are invited to campus to share their insights. Past speakers of this event include famed skateboarder Tony Hawk, John Wilson, Co-Founder of Stance, Thom McElroy, Co-Founder of Volcom, Jim Sinegal, Founder of Costco and more. This event gives students the opportunity to interact and get business insights from successful entrepreneurs.
