Lavin Entrepreneurship Center Community Newsletter

December, 2017

The Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences (EIS) Complex is the newest strategic initiative at San Diego State University. The vision of the EIS complex is to create collaborative collisions of STEM disciplines and entrepreneurship efforts through turning interdisciplinary research into real-world solutions. This complex will house state-of-the-art scientific and industrial machines, cutting-edge labs, working spaces, and classrooms. Similar to the at Stanford, the EIS complex will be a hub of innovation with the goal of preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs. To help bring the products created to market, the EIS complex will house the William E. Leonhard Entrepreneurship Center including housing the ZIP Launchpad and the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center. The complex will be LEED certified and also host several other established centers like, the ZIP Idea Lab and H.G. Fenton Idea Lab. You are welcome to come by and visit our space after January 16th, 2018. For now, learn more about the EIS complex in our 2017 Annual Report.

In our 2017 Annual Report, we highlight the recognition San Diego State University’s Lavin Entrepreneurship Center received by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC) and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). In September 2016, the GCEC awarded the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center with the 2016 Exceptional Activities in Entrepreneurship Across Disciplines award. In January 2017, USASBE awarded SDSU with the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Education National Model Undergraduate Program Award. This award is given annually to colleges and universities that have developed and currently still offer high quality and innovative programs, the purpose of which is to educate and train future generations of entrepreneurs. Receiving this recognition from peers in the entrepreneurship center community is very rewarding given that spreading entrepreneurship across the campus has been one of our top strategic goals.

New Business

Highlights from our 2017 Annual Report include hosting professional skateboarder and Co-Founder of Birdhouse Skateboards, Tony Hawk, as our speaker in the L. Robert Payne Lecture Series on the SDSU campus. Hawk gave the students insights into what enabled him to turn his love for skateboarding into several successful businesses. He spoke on the importance of being passionate about what you are doing, having a supportive team of people you trust, and how critical it is to control your brand with a long-term view. Students spoke highly of the event and described Hawk as an example to follow. To see his speech, go to the homepage on our website. If you or someone you know would like to be part of our annual L. Robert Payne Speaker Series in which distinguished entrepreneurs are invited to campus to share their insights, please contact Bernhard Schroeder at

This year, the Women in Entrepreneurship Lecture Series hosted its inaugural WE Inspire event on February 9th.The event presented SDSU students with the opportunity to listen to three women entrepreneurs provide insights on their journey in the business world. Among the three women speakers was keynote speaker Lonnie Ali, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, business woman, and wife of the late Muhammad Ali. Ali was joined by Ann Marie Griffith and Margaret “Marjy” Stagmeier. Following the panel discussion, there was an hour of networking. Fifteen entrepreneurs from San Diego led student discussions at round tables, encouraging them to ask any questions they had about starting a business and being successful. Our next Women in Entrepreneurship Lecture Series will be hosted on February 22, 2018.

The California Entrepreneurship Educators Conference convenes annually as a community of entrepreneurship educators, researchers, and thought leaders dedicated to higher education and research. Our 2018 conference will be highly interactive with simultaneous sessions, creating an environment to learn, share, and collaborate. It will feature a number of inspiring top entrepreneurship educators and researchers serving as panelists, breakout session leaders and guest speakers including, Dr. Alex Bruton, Dr. Doan Winkel, Dr. Norris Krueger, Dr. Elissa Grossman, and more. The conference will be hosted on the SDSU campus on April 12th, 13th, and 14th. Make sure to reserve your seat on our website and follow us on LinkedIn for conference information and sneak peeks!
