SDSU Students Take 2nd Place at 2014 Venture Capital Investment Competition

Venture Capital Investment The San Diego State University student team secured the second place award at the West Regional Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) hosted at the University of Southern California (USC). The 2014 team consisted of Topher Williams, David Duwe, Lauren Fraser, Greg Robertson, and Casey Covey, who all proved confident and well prepared for the duration of the high speed competition. The team was judged by professional venture capitalists, many of whom voiced their praise of the strong effort put forward by the team. It was an exciting journey for the five MBA students and they were collectively very pleased with the ten month effort and the outcome.

The graduate level VCIC is a strategy competition designed to give MBA students the opportunity to emulate the behaviors of venture capitalists by acting as investors, reviewing plans submitted by actual entrepreneurial companies, and seeking funding. "The program was essentially an internship in the investor equity space, an area which is traditionally difficult to get access to as an outsider," said Casey Covey, one of the students who participated in the VCIC team this year. "It tied together many things we study in the MBA program, including marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, as well as forced you to hone your skills in communication, analytics, and making decisions quickly," added Covey.
