Barcelona, Spain

Dates: December 28, 2012 through January 15, 2013
Course: Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship (MGT 358)

Students at Cava Berdie in Barcelona
Students were housed in the heart of the city, providing them with the opportunity to experience life in Barcelona on a daily basis. Lectures were conducted at don Quijote, a private school in the city, where students completed the classroom portion of the experience. Residing in Barcelona introduced students to several cultures in one city. The diversity and high entrepreneurial climate due to the local culture was beneficial to the students providing them with a fully interactive experience.

Students who participated met with entrepreneurs at a local winery, restaurant, tour company, and cooking school, which provided them with great insight into the entrepreneurial climate in Barcelona. The interactions with the local entrepreneurs allowed students to develop a better understanding of the basic principles of entrepreneurship and learn the processes involved with identifying customers and developing a product that meets a real need as the entrepreneurs shared their personal wisdom, experiences, and entrepreneurial passion.

Upon completion, students said they found it extremely rewarding to immerse within a culture for a short time period and felt as though they got a feel for the entrepreneurial climate in Barcelona by having the local entrepreneurs discuss how their companies run in an international context and through meeting people from all over the world and hearing about their experiences and aspirations.

I look for three I's in an employee--integrity, industry and intelligence. Of the three, integrity is the most important.
